A thread on reading
Reading recommendations.
The books that taught us what we know.
The publication you're reading is downstream of other people's writing. Doug Tallamy, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Mary Oliver, Annie Dillard, Aldo Leopold — the lineage is long and it stretches back further than any of us. We are not adding anything new. We are translating what they wrote into the everyday vocabulary of a person looking out a window.
These notes are about books. Which ones to start with. Which ones to read when. Which ones changed how we look at the patch outside the kitchen.
Right now there is one piece in this thread. There will be more. If you have a recommendation, write to us at hello@backyard.bio. Some of the best books we've read came from readers.

If you only read four books on this whole subject, here are the four. In order.
